Unlike a complete lawn replacement, the existing turf stays in place.
Why Top Dressing Works Well With Core Aeration
We often combine top dressing with core aeration.
Core aeration removes plugs from the lawn, opening the soil and relieving compaction. Applying top dressing afterward allows some of the new material to work into those openings instead of simply sitting on the surface.
For lawns undergoing more substantial renovation, multiple passes of aeration may be appropriate.
The basic process is simple:
Core Aeration → Top Dressing → Seeding → Establishment
Each step helps create better conditions for the grass that follows.
Can Top Dressing Help an Uneven Lawn?
Top dressing can help improve minor low spots and surface irregularities, but it isn't a replacement for major grading.
Applying too much material at once can bury existing turf. That's why the correct application depth matters.
Lawns with significant drainage or grading problems may require a different approach, while smaller imperfections can often be improved through properly applied top dressing.
Should You Seed After Top Dressing?
It depends on the lawn.
If the existing grass is already dense and the primary goal is improving the soil, additional seed may not be necessary.
For thin, bare or struggling lawns, top dressing can be combined with overseeding or hydroseeding. The new growing material provides improved seed-to-soil contact and gives new grass a better environment for establishment.

On one Spokane-area lawn renovation, the existing turf was thin and inconsistent but still worth preserving.

- Complete re-hydroseeding
Instead of tearing out the existing lawn, we improved the growing environment and introduced new grass throughout the thin and bare areas.

How Much Top Dressing Does a Lawn Need?
The amount of material depends primarily on the square footage of the lawn and the desired application depth.
A light top dressing requires significantly less material than a more substantial lawn renovation.
That's why we measure the actual turf area and calculate the required material rather than guessing how many yards a property needs.
When Should You Consider Lawn Top Dressing?
Top dressing may be a good option for lawns with:
- Thin or inconsistent turf

Top dressing isn't the answer to every turf problem. Irrigation issues, insects, disease, shade and drainage problems may need to be addressed separately.
