It isn't a magic layer of dirt that instantly fixes every lawn. Severe damage or major grading and drainage problems need a different approach, and irrigation, insect, disease or shade problems have to be fixed on their own.

How We Top Dress a Lawn
Every property is different, but a typical Spokane top dressing job follows these steps.

The material settles around the grass and into the aeration holes. Seed goes down if the lawn needs it, and proper watering afterward is critical.

How Much Top Dressing Does a Lawn Need?
It depends on two things: the square footage of your lawn and the application depth. That's why we measure your turf and calculate the material, rather than estimating how many yards a property “looks like” it needs.
A light top dressing takes far less material than a lawn getting substantial soil improvement or minor leveling. For a sense of scale, a quarter-inch layer over 1,000 square feet works out to about three-quarters of a cubic yard. Depth matters the other way too: too much at once can bury and smother the existing grass.

Top Dressing Questions
Should I aerate before top dressing?
Usually, yes. Core aeration opens holes in the soil, so top dressing spread afterward works down into them instead of sitting on the surface. For lawns that need more improvement, multiple aeration passes may be appropriate.
Can top dressing level a bumpy lawn?
It can smooth minor low spots and surface irregularities, but it isn't a replacement for regrading. Applying too much at once can bury the existing grass, so the right depth matters. Lawns with major grading or drainage problems need a different approach.
Do I need to seed after top dressing?
It depends on the lawn. If the grass is already dense and the goal is better soil, extra seed may not be needed. For thin or bare lawns, top dressing pairs well with overseeding, because the new material gives seed better contact with the soil.
When is the best time to top dress a lawn in Spokane?
When the grass is actively growing and can grow up through the new material. Because top dressing is often done right after core aeration, it fits the same windows: early spring or fall.
